Meediterranean tortoise

This installation represents the typical Mediterranean ecosystem where this tortoise is found, along with the spur-thighed tortoise.

Where can you find them?

The installation with Mediterranean tortoises houses two different species:
Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni) and the spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca)

General features

Although they greatly resemble one another, there are some differences:

Hermann’s tortoise (Testudo hermanni):
• Stronger yellow colouring
• It has a horny spike on the tip of its tail
• No spur on its legs
• The first vertebral plate is bigger than the second
• Its supracaudal plate is divided

Spur-thighed tortoise (Testudo graeca):
• Less intense yellow colouring
• It has no horny spike on the tip of its tail
• It has a spur on its legs
• The first vertebral plate is smaller than the second
• Its supracaudal plate is not divided
