Eurasian spoonbill

The Eurasian spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia) is a wading bird, widespread between Eurasia and Africa.

You can discover the Eurasian spoonbill in the marsh of Oceanogràfic, located in the aviary.

General aspects

It is a bird with practically all white plumage and a dark, spoon shaped bill from which its name is taken. Very noticeable, especially in the reproductive period, is the crest of feathers which appear on the neck of both males and females.
This species is 90cm in size.

It uses its spoon shaped bill to feed. It moves it from side to side to filter its food from the mud.
